Perceived Languages

I think that hands have a tremendous power to convey emotions, especially in regard to the creative arts. I use my hands everyday to bring life and purpose to the reeds that I weave. One afternoon, as I was weaving and thinking about how my woven art has evolved, I decided to develop a new weaving technique. Looking at my hands, I thought about how they are a “tool” that I use every day. That is when it hit me! I would create something really new that acknowledges how important hands are to all of us, after all humans alone have hands. I went through a series of trial and error attempts to make the perfect mold of my hand as a template, that I could weave into a new technique I developed called “Dimensional Weave.” For me, this series has so many possibilities because hands express countless behaviors and symbolize many cultural beliefs and values, which is why I have called this collection Perceived Languages.
